MDV 200 Owner’s Manual
Introduction
The Myryad MDV 200 DVD-Video Player has been designed to offer a combination of high quality sound reproduction and elegant styling in keeping with other Myryad products. The MDV 200 is a full-function remote-controlled DVD-Video player. It has fixed-level low-impedance audio outputs to drive a Myryad pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier or other high quality amplifier. Video outputs are provided in composite, s-video and component form and can be fed to an audio-video preamplifier (such as the Myryad MDP 500) or amplifier or direct to a TV. In addition the MDV 200 has coax and optical digital outputs (SPDIF standard) to feed a digital surround processor (such as the Myryad MDP 500), and a "Smart My-Link" control input and output.
The MDV 200 offers a range of expansion possibilities:
- The My-Link input can be connected to a Myryad pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier so that the MDV 200 will automatically be switched on or off when the amplifier is switched on or off.
- The My-Link input/output can be coupled to other Myryad products that can then be remote-controlled via the MDV 200’s infra-red receiver – or vice-versa.
- When linked to a "Smart My-Link" compatible Myryad preamplifier or integrated amplifier a number of extra features become available which make the system as a whole easier and quicker to operate.
Accessories
Your MDV 200 is supplied with the following accessories:
- Separate mains power cord to suit country of sale.
- My-Link interconnect (0.5m RCA-RCA).
- MDV 200 remote control handset.

Safety and Installation Notes
This DVD player generates very little heat but still requires some ventilation. Do not place it on a rug or other soft surface into which it could sink, obstructing the air inlets in its underside. Do not allow any obstruction to the ventilation slots in the rear panel. The DVD player should not be installed in a built-in situation such as a bookcase or rack unless proper ventilation is provided.
CAUTION:
To prevent a fire or shock hazard, do not permit this product to become wet. If liquid is accidentally spilled on it, immediately shut off its power at the wall socket and unplug the AC power cord. Rear panel connections
POWER inlet
The MDV 200 will operate directly from any line voltage between 100V and 240V AC, 50 or 60Hz without adjustment.
Plug the female (socket) end of the power cord into the power inlet on the rear of the DVD player. Plug the male (plug) end of the cord into a "live" wall socket or a suitable heavy-duty extension cable.
UK version: The mains plug is supplied fitted with a 5A fuse. It should only be replaced with a fuse of the same rating (5A) which complies with BS1362.
POWER switch
Press one side of this rocker switch (the side nearer the edge of the rear panel) to switch the DVD player ON and the other side (nearer the mains inlet) to switch it OFF. When the POWER switch is in the OFF position all power is disconnected from the DVD player. In this condition the DVD player cannot be powered up from the front panel or the remote control. When the POWER switch is in the ON position (and the power cord correctly inserted and plugged in to a live wall socket) the DVD player will power up in standby mode (see FRONT PANEL CONTROLS, STANDBY, below).
Always switch the POWER switch OFF when making any connections to the DVD player. It is recommended that the POWER switch is turned OFF if the DVD player is not going to be used for an extended period of time.
ANALOGUE AUDIO outputs
These outputs are suited to the “DVD” or other “Line” inputs (e.g. CD or AUX) of any pre-amplifier or integrated amplifier. Alternatively they can be connected directly to the Line or Audio inputs of a TV or monitor.
DIGITAL COAXIAL output
This is a serial electrical digital output to the “SPDIF” standard. It should be connected via a suitable interconnect to the coaxial digital input of a digital A/V processor/amplifier with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG decoder (e.g. Myryad MDP 500 Preamplifier-Processor). The cable should be of standard 75Ω impedance for best performance.
DIGITAL OPTICAL output
This is a serial optical digital output to the “SPDIF” standard. It should be connected via a suitable “Toslink” optical interconnect to the optical digital input of a digital processor/amplifier with built-in Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG decoder (e.g. Myryad MDP 500 Preamplifier-Processor).
COMPOSITE VIDEO output
This output carries the composite video signal and should be connected via a suitable video interconnect to the composite video input of an A/V preamplifier or amplifier – or direct to the composite video input of a TV or monitor. Composite video interconnects should be of 75 ohm impedance and have RCA phono connectors.
S-VIDEO output
This output carries the s-video (separated video) signal which delivers the colour information separately from the black-and-white (brightness). It should be connected via a suitable s-video interconnect to the s-video input of an A/V preamplifier or amplifier – or direct to the s-video input of a TV or monitor. S-video interconnects should be of 75 ohm impedance and have 4-pin mini-DIN connectors.
COMPONENT VIDEO outputs
These outputs carry the video signal in component form, either Y, Pr, Pb (colour difference signals) or R, G, B (Red, Green and Blue). The component video outputs are compatible with high quality projection TVs, flat-panel plasma TVs and High-Definition TVs. The connection should be made using three video interconnects of 75 ohm impedance with RCA phono connectors. Note “Y, Pr, Pb” signals are sometimes also called “Y, Cr, Cb”.
SCART A/V output
The SCART multi-way output connector carries a variety of signals: the analogue audio outputs, plus the option of any of the video signals, composite, s-video, Y/Pr/Pb and RGB, depending upon the system setup (see Table 3, below). It should be linked via a SCART-to-SCART lead to the SCART input on a TV or monitor.
Note: When the SCART output is used, do not make any connection to any of the other video outputs.
MY-LINK input/output
When the MDV 200 is used in a system with other Myryad products (e.g. M-Series or Cameo), all may be joined together via the My-Link. The My-Link is a communications bus that allows all the linked components to operate together as a system and distributes the remote commands received by any one to each of the others. The simplest function provided by the My-Link bus is that all linked units will switch into or out of standby mode when the amplifier’s front panel or remote control standby key is pressed.
Use a short RCA-to-RCA (phono-to-phono) interconnect cable to connect from the MY-LINK IN socket on the MDV 200 to the MY-LINK OUT socket on the preamplifier or amplifier. A suitable 0.5m long My-Link cable is supplied with the MDV 200. A second cable may then be run from the MY-LINK OUT socket on MDV 200 to the MY-LINK IN socket on a Myryad tuner – “daisy-chain” fashion. Further compatible Myryad products can be linked in the same way, running from the MY-LINK OUT socket on the tuner. Inexpensive interconnects may be used as the My-Link bus carries only control signals, not audio, so these cables have no effect on sound quality.
When the MDV 200 is connected via the My-Link to an Integrated Amplifier or Preamplifier equipped with “Smart My-Link” more powerful system features are available (see page 17).
Front panel controls
STANDBY
When the MDV 200 is plugged into a live wall socket and the POWER switch is turned ON, it will power up in "standby" mode. The display will briefly read “OFF” and the LED (Light Emitting Diode) in the STANDBY button will glow red. In this mode the internal circuitry of the MDV 200 is powered up but disabled, so that it consumes very little power and its audio output is muted.
When the STANDBY button is pressed the MDV 200’s circuitry will be activated and, after a few seconds delay, the outputs will be enabled. During this delay period the LED in the STANDBY button will flash blue. When the outputs are un-muted it will glow blue continuously. The blue-coloured display will illuminate, briefly reading “on”, followed by “NO DISC“.
When the STANDBY button is pressed again the DVD player will be returned to standby mode. The drawer, if open, will close, the LED in the STANDBY button will glow red again and the display will briefly read “OFF” before being extinguished.
CAUTION:
When in standby mode the internal circuitry of the MDV 200 is still live, so all safety precautions MUST be followed.
Infra-red receiver
The infra-red (IR) remote control receiver is mounted behind the window, just above the display. It must not be obscured when the DVD player is to be operated using the remote control handset. Where possible it is best to arrange that the IR receiver is in "line-of-sight" of the remote handset.
Display
The operation of the player is indicated on a high quality blue Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD).
Disc drawer
The OPEN/CLOSE button controls the drawer. It will accept either normal 120mm discs, or small 80mm discs.
OPEN/CLOSE
Press this button to open or close the disc drawer. The drawer may also be closed by pushing the drawer front gently. When the drawer is open the display will read “OPEN”. When the drawer is closed with no disc in the player the display will indicate “NO DISC“. If the OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed when the MDV 200 is in standby mode, the player will switch out of standby and the drawer will open.
When a disc is inserted and the drawer closed the display will flash “LOAD” for a few seconds while the MDV 200 assesses what type of disc has been inserted. When this is completed the disc starts immediately in play mode.
PLAY
When a disc is present and the player is in “stop” mode, a single press of the PLAY key will start the disc playing from the first track, and illuminate the play symbol. With the disc drawer open, pressing PLAY will cause the drawer to close and the disc to start playing from the first track – exactly as pressing OPEN/CLOSE.
If the PLAY button is pressed when the MDV 200 is in standby mode, the player will switch out of standby and any disc present will play.
PAUSE
When a disc is playing press PAUSE to stop the playback, but keep the laser at the same location on the disc. The pause symbol will illuminate in the display. With a DVD or VCD a “still” picture will be shown. Press PAUSE again or PLAY to resume normal playback.
STOP
When the STOP button is pressed the disc stops playing, and the player goes into “resume stop” mode. In this mode, pressing PLAY will cause the disc to restart from the same point at which STOP had been pressed.
In "resume stop" mode, if STOP is pressed again the player will go into "stop" mode. After a short time the disc stops spinning and the laser head is returned to the beginning of the disc. When the player is in "stop" mode, a single press of the PLAY key will start the disc playing from the first track or the DVD disc menu. The player automatically returns to "stop" mode when a disc has finished playing.
SKIP
The SKIP keys are used to select the track (or chapter) to be played. While a disc is playing, pressing SKIP forward will cause the player to skip to the beginning of the next track. If SKIP back is pressed the player will skip to the beginning of the previous track. Repeated pressing of SKIP forwadr or back will make the player skip forward or back over any number of tracks. When playing the last track of a disc, SKIP forward has no effect. The SKIP keys have the same function in PAUSE mode.
REMOTE CONTROL HANDSET OPERATION
The handset supplied with the MDV 200 has been ergonomically designed to be easy and comfortable to use. It contains all the controls featured on the front panel, plus many others required for setting up and operating the MDV 200.
System Setup using the Remote Control

In playback mode press the PLAY MODE key and the TV screen will appear exactly as in Table 6 on page 12.
Repeat and random selection is similar to that described for DVD, but the repeat modes are ONE (repeat current track) or ALL (repeat whole disc). Note: repeat ONE mode is cancelled if SKIP forward or backward is pressed.
It is possible to program the MDV 200 to play back tracks in any specified order. With the play mode menu displayed use the cursor keys select < PROGRAM > and then press ENTER. The program table shown in Table 10 below will appear, with the top left pair of asterisks highlighted.

Table 10 CD Program menu
The top line indicates that, in this case, tracks 1 to 10 are available for programming. The procedure to enter a program is as follows:
Enter the number of the first track to be programmed followed by the down cursor key to complete the entry. Then enter the next program track in the same way. Using the cursor and number keys enter as many program tracks as desired, up to a maximum of 16.
When all the desired tracks have been programmed move the cursor down to highlight < OK > and press ENTER. The TV screen will show “PROGRAM PLAY” briefly in the top left corner and proceed to play the programmed tracks.
If at any stage incorrect data is entered, press the “CLEAR” key (10) to delete it, then re-enter the correct data. The entire program can be cleared by moving the cursor to highlight < CLEAR > and pressing ENTER. The program is also cleared if the disc drawer is opened.
DISPLAY
In playback mode press the “DISPLAY“ key once and the TV will show the elapsed time and remaining time of the current track at the top right of the screen. If the “DISPLAY” key is pressed once again the TV screen will show the following table:
CDDA 0 : 01 : 12 0 : 02 : 45 TRACK : 3 TOTAL : 10 |
Table 11 CD video information display
The displayed data means:
CDDA : CD playing
0 : 01 : 12 : Elapsed time of current track is 1 minute 12 seconds
0 : 02 : 45 : Remaining time of current track is 2 minutes and 45 seconds
TRACK: 3 Track 3 is currently playing
TOTAL : 10 There is a total of 10 tracks on this CD
Press DISPLAY again to remove this menu.
Playing an MP3 disc
Operation of the MDV 200 with MP3 discs is exactly the same as with CDs (see above).
When the DISPLAY key is pressed the TV screen shows a table similar to Table 10, but only one time is shown, indicating the current elapsed time of the whole disc.
Playing a Video-CD
In most respects playing a VCD is exactly the same as playing a DVD. This section therefore just describes the differences in operation.
1. VCD 1.1 and VCD 2.0 discs
When a VCD is inserted and the disc drawer closed the TV screen will briefly show “VCD 1.1” or “VCD 2.0” in the upper left corner. The DVD will start playback if the PLAY key is pressed.
2. Playing VCD 2.0 and above (“interactive” discs)
There are two ways to play these discs.
(1) The DVD player will start playback and the menu will show on the TV screen. Press the number keys to select the track you want and then press the “ENTER” key to start playing. When this track is complete the screen will go back to the menu. Then use the same procedure to select another track. If there is more than one menu page, press“:" or "9" to go to the next or previous page.
(2) Press the “MENU/PBC” key (11) to cancel the interactive PBC (Playback Control) mode and go to stop mode. The DVD player will start to play the VCD disc from the first track to the last track automatically.
SKIP Forward / Backward
In playback mode, if PBC is on, pressing SKIP forward or SKIP back on the front panel or remote control will return to the menu. If PBC is off, pressing SKIP forward or SKIP back will make the video will jump to the next or previous track.
SCAN Forward / Backward, PAUSE, SLOW motion and A-B repeat
The SCAN, PAUSE, SLOW and A-B functions operate in exactly the same way as with DVD as described above.
Go to a specified location in a VCD
In playback mode use the number keys to select the required track and press ENTER to play. If a track exceeding the limit of the VCD disc is chosen will show on the TV screen when ENTER is pressed. If the wrong location is chosen it may be cancelled by pressing the CLEAR key.
PLAY MODE – Repeat, Random and Program
When the PLAY MODE key is pressed a screen similar to Table 6 (page 12) will be displayed. The VCD play mode screen allows a choice of REPEAT and RANDOM – exactly as with DVD – plus PBC ON/OFF.
When PROGRAM is chosen the PBC program menu is the same as the CD program menu (see page 15).
DISPLAY
In playback mode press the “DISPLAY“ key once and the TV will show the elapsed time and remaining time of the disc at the top right of the screen. If the “DISPLAY” key is pressed once again the TV screen will show the following table:
VCD 2.0 0 : 00 : 12 1 : 01 : 45 TRACK : 1 TOTAL : 14 |
Table 12 VCD video information display
The displayed data means:
VCD 2.0 : This VCD disc is version 2.0 .
0 : 00 : 12 : Elapsed time is 12 seconds
1 : 01 : 45 : Remaining time is 1 hour, 1 minute and 45 seconds
TRACK: 1 Track 1 is currently playing
TOTAL : 14 There is a total of 14 tracks on this VCD disc
Press DISPLAY again to remove this menu.
SYSTEM OPERATION WITH SMART MY-LINK
When used as a linked system with a Myryad Preamplifier or Integrated Amplifier equipped with “Smart My-Link” the MDV 200 has a number of extra features that make the system as a whole easier and quicker to use than a normal hi-fi. These include:
Start-on-Play
(DVD): Press play on the DVD player (or the remote control) and both the DVD player and amplifier will switch out of standby (if necessary) and play the DVD. The amplifier will automatically select the DVD source.
Start-on-Open
(DVD): Press open/close on the DVD player (or the remote control) and both the DVD player and amplifier will switch out of standby (if necessary) and the DVD drawer will open. The amplifier will automatically select the DVD source.
Intelligent Input Selection
(Amplifier): Press a source select button (e.g. DVD) on the amplifier’s remote control and the system will awaken (if in standby) only the amplifier and the selected source (e.g. DVD).
Mute/Pause Control
(Amplifier/DVD): When the DVD input on the amplifier is selected, pressing MUTE on the amplifier’s remote control will mute the amplifier and pause the DVD. When the amplifier mute is cancelled, the DVD will continue playing.
Power-Saving Mode
(Amplifier): The amplifier will switch the DVD Player into standby if the DVD input remains unselected for more than ten minutes.
Automatic Switch-On
(DVD): If the standby button on the DVD player is pressed, the amplifier will also awaken and select the DVD input.
Use of Myryad A/V System Remote or other Universal SL-9000 derived remote controls
Any Universal Remote Controls “Home Theater Master” SL-9000 or SL-9000 derived handset (such as the Myryad A/V Learning Remote) can be used to control the MDV 200 in one of the following ways:
- With a Myryad A/V System Remote press the DVD device button. Check the operation of the OPEN/CLOSE, PLAY and STOP functions. If they work correctly then the remote has the MDV 200 control codes pre-loaded. The handset keys will operate as described below.
- With a non-Myryad SL-9000 remote, or if method 1 does not work then down-load code page ### using the following procedure.
- Press the DVD device button at the top of your handset and the MUTE button simultaneously. SET will appear in the LCD display.
- Enter the three digit code #, #, #. S_### will appear in the LCD display.
- Press the DVD device button again and PASS will flash in the LCD display.
- Check that the remote control now operates correctly in DVD mode, controlling your MDV 200. For instance, try the OPEN/CLOSE, PLAY and STOP keys.
- If methods 1 and 2 do not work then the handset does not already contain the codes to control the MDV 200. It must be programmed using the remote’s Learning mode (described in the Home Theater Master’s Operating Manual) to teach it all the commands that you use most regularly.
